End Barrens is a Java Edition-exclusive biome found along the outermost fringes of the outer islands in The End dimension. It forms the jagged, cliff-lined edges of End Midlands and End Highlands, where the terrain drops sharply into the void below. The ground is composed entirely of End Stone, and no vegetation, structures, or decorative features of any kind appear within it, giving End Barrens a notably stark and empty character.
Unlike its neighboring biomes, End Barrens does not support the generation of End Cities or Chorus Trees, which makes it one of the least resource-rich areas in The End. Despite this, End Gateways can still spawn here, offering teleportation links that allow players to travel back toward the central island. The only mob that naturally appears in End Barrens is the Enderman, which wanders the barren End Stone plateaus in the absence of any other wildlife.
End Barrens was added to the game alongside the other outer End biomes in Java Edition 1.13. It was initially referred to as 'The End - Barren Island' before being officially renamed to End Barrens in snapshot 18w19a. Prior to the removal of numerical biome IDs in Java Edition 1.18, this biome carried the ID of 43. For players exploring the outer End, End Barrens serves mainly as a navigational landmark and a source of End Gateways rather than a destination for gathering resources.
