End Highlands is a Java Edition-exclusive biome situated on the elevated hilltops of the outer islands in The End dimension. These islands are separated from the central End island by a void gap of approximately 1,000 blocks, making the End Highlands one of the more remote locations a player can reach in the game.
The terrain of the End Highlands consists entirely of End Stone, decorated with the distinctive branching growths of Chorus Plants and their flowering tops. Chorus trees — and by extension chorus fruit and chorus flowers — grow naturally only here, making the End Highlands the sole wild source of these materials. End Cities, the tall tower-like structures containing valuable loot chests and Shulker mobs, generate exclusively within this biome as well. End Gateways, which allow players to travel between outer islands, also appear here.
No weather events occur in the End Highlands; there is neither rain nor snow, and the sky carries the characteristic purple-grey fog of The End dimension. The only mob that spawns naturally is the Enderman, which appears in groups of four.
The End Highlands biome was introduced in Java Edition 1.13 during snapshot 18w06a as one of four sub-biomes that divide the outer End islands. It was originally called 'The End - High island' before being renamed to its current form in snapshot 18w19a. Its former numerical biome ID was 42, a value that became obsolete when numeric biome IDs were removed in Java Edition 1.18.
