Dark Forest

Dark Forest (Roofed Forest) is an Overworld biome recognized immediately by its dense, overlapping tree canopy that shuts out nearly all direct sunlight. Oak, dark oak, and scattered birch trees grow in tight clusters, their leaves forming a near-continuous ceiling above a floor covered in leaf litter, tall grass, and double-tall flowers such as rose bushes, peonies, and lilacs. Both red and brown huge mushrooms also sprout throughout the undergrowth, with red varieties appearing more frequently.

Because so little light penetrates to ground level, hostile mobs are able to spawn and remain active throughout the day inside the Dark Forest. This makes traversal notably more hazardous than in most other forested biomes. The Dark Forest generates where moderate temperatures meet high humidity, and it typically borders birch forests, jungles, and bamboo jungles. It never directly adjoins biomes that contain villages, and any elevated terrain within it transitions into the pale garden variant. The high humidity values also encourage lush caves to form in the underground layers beneath the biome.

Wolves and bee nests, both commonly found in standard forests, are absent from the Dark Forest. Instead, the biome is most notable for being the exclusive home of woodland mansions — large, multi-room structures inhabited by evokers and vindicators. These mansions contain chests with rare loot, including totems of undying, making the Dark Forest a destination for players seeking those specific resources.

Despite its rewards, the Dark Forest remains one of the more demanding biomes to navigate. The low ambient light, constant mob activity, and the labyrinthine layout of woodland mansions all require careful preparation before venturing in.
