Sulfur Spike
Sulfur Spike is a natural block found within sulfur caves, capable of generating both as stalactites hanging downward from ceilings and as stalagmites rising upward from the ground. While its formation behavior shares some similarities with pointed dripstone, the Sulfur Spike has several characteristics that set it apart in its cave environment.
Stalactite forms of the Sulfur Spike grow gradually beneath sulfur blocks, advancing one growth step roughly every five in-game days through random ticks. In Java Edition, these hanging columns can reach a natural maximum length of 3 blocks, whereas Bedrock Edition allows growth up to 8 blocks long. If the block supporting a stalactite is removed, the entire column detaches and falls as a projectile, dealing impact damage to any player or mob below — similar in effect to a dropped anvil. Notably, stalagmite forms of the Sulfur Spike do not amplify fall damage the way pointed dripstone does; landing on one simply deals standard fall damage with no special death message.
Columns can form naturally when a stalactite and a stalagmite grow toward one another and their tips merge. Players can replicate this manually by stacking Sulfur Spike blocks from either end until they connect. For crafting purposes, four Sulfur Spike blocks placed in a two-by-two arrangement at a crafting table produce one sulfur item. Additionally, Sulfur Spike blocks are renewable through wandering trader transactions, with traders occasionally offering two spikes for a single emerald at approximately a 7% chance per trade slot.
