End Gateway
End Gateway is a naturally generated portal structure found exclusively within the End dimension. Up to 20 of these structures can appear around the perimeter of the central End island, each one produced following a successive defeat of the ender dragon. They are distributed in a circular arrangement at approximately Y-level 75, roughly 96 blocks from the island's center, with the order of their creation governed by the world seed. Once all 20 have been generated, no further End Gateway structures will appear around the central island.
When an entity first passes through a central-island End Gateway, a corresponding gateway is created out on the outer End islands. That outer gateway then links back to the matching central-island structure. Separately, End Gateway blocks also occur naturally in the outer End islands — particularly in End Highlands biomes in Java Edition — and these always send entities directly to the End platform, making them useful for returning from deep exploration of end cities.
Structurally, every End Gateway consists of a single gateway block encased by 12 bedrock blocks arranged in a roughly octahedral formation. When first created, a magenta beam projects vertically from the structure for 10 seconds. Each time an entity travels through it, a purple beam appears briefly; this beam also pulses on its own every two minutes. Because the surrounding bedrock obstructs direct entry, players typically resort to throwing ender pearls, using elytra, crawling, or channeling water to reach the gateway block itself.
Teleportation behavior differs between editions. In Java Edition, the landing spot is found by scanning an 11×11 area around the destination End Gateway block for the highest solid, non-bedrock surface. Bedrock Edition uses a separate algorithm that can place the player on partial blocks and may produce a small floating island if no suitable landing location exists.
