Cold Chicken
Cold Chicken is a passive mob introduced in Minecraft 1.21.5 (Java Edition) and 1.21.70 (Bedrock Edition) as part of the "Spring to Life" update. It is a cold-climate variant of the standard Chicken, distinguished by dark plumage and a decorative feathered crest atop its head — a design inspired by the real-world French Crèvecœur chicken breed. Aside from its appearance, the Cold Chicken shares all of the same behaviors as a regular Chicken.
The Cold Chicken spawns naturally across a wide range of cold and frozen biomes, including Taiga, Snowy Plains, Snowy Slopes, Ice Spikes, Grove, Frozen Peaks, Jagged Peaks, Frozen Ocean, Windswept Hills, and several related variants. Its most notable distinguishing feature is that it lays Blue Eggs rather than the ordinary white eggs dropped by standard Chickens. Throwing a Blue Egg gives a chance to hatch a cold-variant chick. Upon death, the Cold Chicken drops Raw Chicken and between zero and one Feathers, identical to other Chicken variants.
Like all Chickens, the Cold Chicken flaps its wings during a fall to descend slowly, preventing fall damage. It can be bred using a variety of seeds, including wheat, beetroot, melon, pumpkin, torchflower, and pitcher seeds. When two Chickens of different variants breed together, the offspring randomly inherits the variant of one of its parents rather than being determined by the surrounding biome. This means the Cold Chicken can be obtained and raised in any biome through deliberate crossbreeding, making it accessible well outside its natural cold-climate habitat.
