Ice Spikes

Ice Spikes (Ice Plains Spikes) is one of the rarest and most visually striking biomes in Minecraft, functioning as an uncommon variant of the snowy plains. Its defining characteristic is the presence of towering packed ice columns that rise dramatically from the ground, giving the landscape an otherworldly, frozen appearance unlike any other environment in the game.

Rather than grass blocks, the floor of Ice Spikes is covered entirely in snow blocks, with scattered ice patches reinforcing the uniformly frozen terrain. Vegetation is nearly nonexistent — only occasional lone spruce trees appear in the rare spots where dirt is exposed during world generation. The biome generates at high weirdness values and requires low humidity, meaning it never borders forested biomes. It is typically separated from ordinary snowy plains by frozen rivers, and at lower elevations it can meet frozen oceans, snowy beaches, or stony shores. On rare occasions, Ice Spikes may also border plains or cherry groves where terrain transitions toward warmer climates.

Wildlife in Ice Spikes is sparse but present. Polar bears and rabbits roam by day, while after dark hostile mobs including strays, skeletons, zombies, creepers, and endermen emerge. In Bedrock Edition specifically, the biome accumulates more snowfall layers than any other biome at generation, and zombie horse jockeys can appear as a unique hostile encounter. Lightning strikes are uncommon here due to the persistent snowfall.

For players using Vibrant Visuals, Ice Spikes offers entirely unique graphical settings — gray atmospherics at both horizon and sky, pale blue-tinted sunlight at half brightness throughout the day, and volumetric fog that deepens the frozen mood. It holds the coldest color grading temperature of any biome in the game.
