Ocean is one of the most expansive biomes in Minecraft, covering a substantial portion of the world's surface with deep, open water. Stretching from sea level down to an ocean floor that typically sits around Y=45, the Ocean floor is mostly layered with gravel, interspersed with patches of clay, dirt, and sand closer to shallower coastal areas. Occasionally, submerged hills and cliffs rise dramatically, sometimes breaching the surface to form small, grass-topped islands scattered across the water.
The Ocean generates wherever continentalness values fall below the threshold required for land. It borders coastal biomes such as beaches, stony shores, and rivers, and can sit adjacent to mountainous terrain, sometimes producing steep oceanic cliffs exceeding 100 blocks in height. The standard Ocean occupies medium temperature zones, positioned between the lukewarm and cold ocean variants in the biome temperature spectrum.
Beneath the waves, dense kelp forests grow toward the surface while seagrass carpets the seabed. A variety of mobs inhabit these waters, including cod, salmon, squid, nautiluses, dolphins, and glow squids. Hostile drowned can also lurk in the depths, posing a threat to unprepared swimmers. Shipwrecks and ocean ruins generate within the Ocean, offering loot and exploration opportunities, although ocean monuments are exclusive to the deep ocean variant.
Beyond its natural resources — kelp, seagrass, and various fish — the Ocean acts as a significant geographical barrier between landmasses. Visiting every ocean variant is also a requirement for completing the 'Sail the 7 Seas' advancement.
