Swamp

Swamp (Swampland) is a wetland biome found in flat, low-lying terrain close to sea level, typically generated in areas with very high erosion values. It never borders the ocean directly, although its water bodies are frequently connected to one. The surrounding landscape often includes plains, forests, and taigas, with windswept hills or windswept savannas at the fringes. Depending on temperature, Swamp borders either mangrove swamps in warmer zones or frozen rivers in colder ones.

Vegetation in the Swamp is varied and distinctive. Swamp oak trees grow both on dry ground and in shallow water, trailing long curtains of vines. Blue orchids — found exclusively in this biome — dot the landscape alongside firefly bushes, lily pads, mushrooms, sugar cane along shorelines, and seagrass on flooded floors. Much of the terrain sits at or below sea level, producing expansive flooded areas with clay on shallow lakebeds and gravel at greater depths. In Bedrock Edition, huge mushrooms can also appear here.

The Swamp is the only biome where swamp huts generate, each sheltering a witch and a black cat. Underground fossils may also form beneath the surface. Slimes spawn here at night between Y=50 and Y=70, with spawn rates tied to the lunar cycle — peaking at full moon and halting entirely during a new moon. The bogged skeleton variant also inhabits this biome, attacking players with poison-tipped arrows.

Visually, the Swamp stands out through its gray-green water tint and thicker underwater fog that limits visibility more than in most other Overworld biomes. Grass and foliage display a mottled appearance driven by a noise-based color algorithm. When Vibrant Visuals is enabled, the biome gains a unique brown-green sky tone and intensified volumetric fog that partially veils the sun.
