The best Minecraft enchantments for tools, weapons and armor

The best enchantments in Minecraft, at a glance

  • Put on almost everything: Unbreaking III + Mending — together they make gear effectively last forever.
  • Tools: Efficiency V, plus Fortune III (more drops) or Silk Touch (mine blocks intact) on pickaxes.
  • Weapons: Sharpness V + Looting III on swords; Density V on the mace; Lunge III on the new spear; Power V (or Infinity) on bows.
  • Armor: Protection IV on every piece, plus Feather Falling IV (boots), Respiration III (helmet) and the leggings-only Swift Sneak III.
  • Best overall enchantment: Mending — it repairs gear with XP and is the one enchantment worth chasing for every item. Full best-in-slot list for each item is in the table below.

Tired of gear breaking mid-fight or mobs wiping you out in a few hits? Enchantments are what separate throwaway starter gear from the kit you keep for hundreds of hours. This is the best-in-slot guide to the best enchantments in Minecraft for every item — tools, weapons and armor — with the exact loadout to aim for and why each pick earns its slot.

It's current as of Java 26.2 and Bedrock 1.26.30, so it covers everything recent: the mace and its Density/Breach/Wind Burst enchantments, the new spear and its Lunge enchantment, and the copper equipment tier. Where Java and Bedrock behave differently, we say so — most guides don't.

What are the best enchantments for every item?

Here's the fast answer — the best-in-slot enchantment loadout for each item, plus the one "signature" enchantment that matters most. Max levels are shown so you know when a piece is fully kitted. Each item gets a full breakdown further down.

Pro tip: Protection, Blast Protection, Fire Protection and Projectile Protection are mutually exclusive — only one goes on a given armor piece. Protection IV is the best all-rounder; swap in a specialized protection only when you know the threat (creepers, the Nether, a skeleton-heavy raid).

1. Best Enchantments for Tools

1.1 Pickaxe, Shovel and Hoe

Best minecraft pickaxe enchantments

The best enchantments for a pickaxe, shovel and hoe are Fortune III, Unbreaking III, Efficiency V and Mending. Below is a tier list of the top 5 best enchantments for pickaxe, shovel and hoe and an explanation of what each of the enchantments does.

Top 5 Best Pickaxe, Shovel and Hoe Enchantments

  1. Fortune: Fortune increases the quantity of drops from ores like coal, diamond, lapis lazuli, redstone, emerald, copper and nether quartz. This means more rewards per block broken—especially valuable for rare resources like diamonds.
  2. Efficiency: Efficiency boosts the mining speed of your tools, letting you break blocks faster. Efficiency V is the max.
  3. Unbreaking: This enchantment reduces the chance that using a tool will lower its durability. While it doesn't technically increase the durability number, it significantly slows how quickly your tool breaks.
  4. Mending: Mending uses XP orbs to repair your gear. Any XP you collect while holding or wearing a Mending item goes directly into durability, not your XP bar. It's the most efficient way to maintain top-tier tools long-term.
  5. Silk Touch: Silk Touch lets you collect blocks in their original form, which is not possible with any other enchantment. Use it to mine ore blocks, grass blocks, glass, ice, bookshelves, and more without breaking them into byproducts.

To get the most out of your tools, keep two versions of your pickaxe—one with Fortune and one with Silk Touch. Swap them out based on what you need. (You can't combine Fortune and Silk Touch on the same tool.)

1.2 Axe

Best minecraft axe enchantments

The best enchantments for axes are Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Sharpness V, Mending, and optionally Silk Touch or Fortune III depending on your use case. Axes are not only for chopping trees—they can also be deadly melee weapons. Below is a tier list of the top 8 best enchantments for axes, with detailed explanations for each.

Top 8 Best Axe Enchantments

  1. Efficiency: This enchantment boosts the chopping speed of your axe. With Efficiency V, you can tear through logs, leaves, and wood-based structures in seconds. It's essential if you're gathering large amounts of wood or clearing forests quickly.
  2. Unbreaking: Unbreaking significantly extends the lifespan of your axe by reducing how often durability is consumed. This is especially useful when paired with Mending, making your tool last for countless uses.
  3. Sharpness: Sharpness increases melee damage dealt by your axe. Since axes already hit harder than swords, this enchantment makes them even more dangerous—perfect for PvP or if you use your axe for combat instead of just chopping wood.
  4. Mending: Mending uses experience orbs to repair your axe automatically. Any XP you earn from mining, killing mobs, or fishing goes straight into restoring durability, saving you time and materials.
  5. Silk Touch: Silk Touch allows you to collect blocks in their original state. While not commonly used on axes, it's handy if you want to harvest mushroom blocks, grass blocks, or bookshelves intact while clearing areas.
  6. Smite: Smite boosts damage against undead mobs like zombies, skeletons, drowned, and wither skeletons. It's a great alternative to Sharpness if you're clearing a mob farm or preparing to fight the Wither.
  7. Bane of Arthropods: This enchantment increases damage against spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, bees, and endermites. It's highly situational but effective if you often deal with arthropod-type mobs.
  8. Fortune: Fortune increases item drops from certain blocks—but its usefulness on axes is very limited. It only affects things like saplings, apples, and melon slices. Unless you're farming those specifically, it's usually not worth the slot.

Whether you're using your axe for combat or gathering, the enchantments you choose should match the job. For fighting, Sharpness is great all-around, Smite is best against undead, and Bane of Arthropods works well in spider-heavy areas. You can't combine Sharpness, Smite or Bane of Arthropods. If you're chopping trees or collecting blocks, Efficiency, Unbreaking, and Mending are essential—then choose either Silk Touch for keeping blocks intact or Fortune for better drops like apples or melons. Just keep in mind, you can't combine Silk Touch and Fortune, so go with what fits your playstyle.

1.3 Fishing Rod

Best minecraft fishing rod enchantments

The best enchantments for a fishing rod are Luck of the Sea III, Unbreaking III, Lure III, and Mending. Below is a tier list of the top 4 best enchantments for fishing rods and an explanation of what each of the enchantments does.

Top 4 Best Fishing Rod Enchantments

  1. Luck of the Sea: Increases your chances of catching valuable items like enchanted books, name tags, and saddles, while reducing the likelihood of pulling up junk items. A must-have for treasure hunting.
  2. Lure: Speeds up how quickly fish bite your line. This enchantment greatly reduces the wait time, making fishing faster and more efficient—perfect for XP farming or food gathering.
  3. Unbreaking: Reduces the chance of your fishing rod taking durability damage each time it's used. The higher the level, the longer your rod lasts—ideal for long fishing sessions.
  4. Mending: Uses XP from each catch to automatically repair your fishing rod. With Mending and Unbreaking together, your rod can essentially last forever.

These enchantments make fishing a reliable way to gather food, XP, and rare loot—all while relaxing by the nearest body of water. 🎣

2. Best Enchantments for Weapons

2.1 Sword

Best minecraft sword enchantments

The best enchantments for a sword are Sharpness V, Looting III, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, Knockback II, and Mending. Below is a tier list of the top 6 best enchantments for sword and an explanation of what each of the enchantments does.

Top 6 Best Sword Enchantments

  1. Sharpness: Sharpness boosts your sword's base damage against all enemies. It's the most versatile damage enchantment and works on all mobs, making it ideal for general survival and PvP. (It scales higher on Bedrock than Java—see the edition table below.)
  2. Looting: Looting increases the number and rarity of items dropped by mobs. This is especially useful when farming ender pearls, rare mob drops, or building mob grinders.
  3. Fire Aspect: Fire Aspect sets your target on fire with each hit, dealing bonus damage over time and cooking meat automatically when animals die. It's flashy and functional, though it can sometimes interfere with mob drops like ender pearls.
  4. Knockback: Knockback pushes enemies away with each hit, increasing your space in combat. While it's useful against melee mobs like creepers and zombies, it can be frustrating when fighting ranged enemies like skeletons, as it forces you to chase them down.
  5. Smite: Smite deals extra damage to all undead mobs, including zombies, skeletons, drowned, wither skeletons, husks, and the Wither boss. It's a powerful alternative to Sharpness if your world or mob farm focuses on undead enemies.
  6. Bane of Arthropods: This enchantment increases damage to arthropod mobs—spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, bees, and endermites. While niche, it's excellent if you're building a spider farm or exploring infested areas.
Pro tip: Since Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are mutually exclusive, most players choose Sharpness for all-around combat. However, Smite is better when facing lots of undead, like during a raid or Wither fight. Bane of Arthropods is great for specialized farms or if you're frequently exploring caves filled with spiders.

2.2 Spear (new)

The spear is the newest weapon in Minecraft, added in the Mounts of Mayhem update and available in both Java and Bedrock. It has a longer reach than a sword and two attack modes: a quick jab on the ground, and a charge attack that scales with your movement speed and knocks riders off their mounts. It comes in seven material tiers—wooden, stone, copper, iron, golden, diamond and netherite.

The best enchantments for a spear are Lunge III, a damage enchantment (Sharpness V, Smite V or Bane of Arthropods V), Unbreaking III and Mending. Spears accept standard melee-weapon enchantments plus the spear-exclusive Lunge.

Top 4 Best Spear Enchantments

  1. Lunge: The spear's signature enchantment, exclusive to spears. On a jab attack it propels you forward in the direction you're facing, with the launch distance growing at each level (I to III). It costs one durability and some hunger per use—so you need a fairly full hunger bar to trigger it—making it great for closing distance or repositioning in a fight.
  2. Sharpness / Smite / Bane of Arthropods: A damage enchantment turns the spear's reach advantage into real DPS. Pick Sharpness for all-round combat, Smite against undead, or Bane of Arthropods against spiders. As always, these three are mutually exclusive.
  3. Unbreaking: Extends the spear's lifespan—valuable since charged attacks and Lunge both cost durability.
  4. Mending: Repairs the spear with XP, so a well-used spear never wears out.
Note: a spear's jab deals more base damage on Bedrock than Java at the same tier (for example, a wooden spear jabs for 1 HP in Java but 2 HP in Bedrock), so the raw numbers you see can differ between editions.

2.3 Mace

Best minecraft mace enchantments

The best enchantments for the mace are Density V, Breach IV, Wind Burst III, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, and Mending. A powerful melee weapon whose damage scales with how far you fall before you hit, the mace delivers unique combat mechanics. Below is a tier list of the top 8 best mace enchantments.

Top 8 Best Mace Enchantments

  1. Density: Increases smash-attack damage based on fall height (+0.5 damage per block fallen, per level). Ideal for jump attacks or diving from cliffs.
  2. Wind Burst: Launches you back into the air after a smash-hit, letting you chain attacks. Excellent for crowd control in close quarters.
  3. Breach: Ignores more of a target's armor per level—perfect for PvP or heavily-armored mobs.
  4. Fire Aspect: Sets mobs on fire and cooks meat. Be cautious—can interfere with certain mob drops.
  5. Bane of Arthropods: Increased damage to spiders, silverfish, bees, and similar. Situational but effective.
  6. Smite: Extra damage to undead mobs like skeletons, drowned, and the Wither.
  7. Unbreaking: Extends the life of your mace by reducing durability loss.
  8. Mending: Keeps your mace repaired using XP—essential for long-term gear.
🪓 Specialized or General Combat? Choose Based on Strategy

Density is the go-to if you lean into the mace's fall-damage smash. Breach helps against armored enemies, and Wind Burst keeps you airborne to chain hits. Remember that Density, Breach, Smite and Bane of Arthropods are all mutually exclusive—pick one damage path. For general combat, Smite or Bane of Arthropods can be more effective. No matter the build, pairing Unbreaking and Mending ensures your mace lasts through battle after battle.

2.4 Bow

Best minecraft bow enchantments

The best enchantments for a bow are Power V, Flame, Punch II, Infinity (or Mending), and Unbreaking III. Below is a tier list of the top 5 best enchantments for bow and an explanation of what each of the enchantments does.

Top 5 Best Bow Enchantments

  1. Infinity: Infinity lets you fire unlimited arrows with just one in your inventory. It's the top-tier utility enchantment for bows and removes the need to craft or carry large stacks of arrows.
  2. Power: Power increases the damage of each arrow. At level V, it dramatically boosts your effectiveness, making it easier to one-shot mobs.
  3. Punch: Punch adds knockback to arrows, pushing enemies away on impact. Great for staying safe or keeping mobs at a distance.
  4. Flame: Flame ignites enemies, dealing fire damage over time. Like Fire Aspect for swords, it also cooks animals on death.
  5. Unbreaking / Mending: These extend the lifespan of your bow. If you're not using Infinity, Mending is great for automatic repairs. But note: Infinity and Mending can't be combined on a bow in either Java or Bedrock, so you'll have to choose one.

2.5 Crossbow

Best minecraft crossbow enchantments

The best enchantments for a crossbow are Quick Charge III, Multishot (or Piercing IV), Unbreaking III and Mending. Below is a tier list of the top 5 best enchantments for crossbow and an explanation of what each of the enchantments does.

Top 5 Best Crossbow Enchantments

  1. Quick Charge: Reduces reload time dramatically, making the crossbow feel more like a bow. At level III, it's faster than a default bow, turning the crossbow into a rapid-fire weapon.
  2. Multishot: Fires three arrows at once in a spread. This is great for hitting multiple mobs in one go, especially in tight groups.
  3. Piercing: Allows arrows to pass through multiple enemies. Unlike Multishot, Piercing is best for lined-up mobs and doesn't waste arrows.
  4. Unbreaking / Mending: These keep your crossbow in top shape. Since crossbows can't take Infinity, Mending becomes the go-to for durability.
  5. Tipped / spectral arrows: Crossbows don't have a Power enchantment, but you can load tipped or spectral arrows for extra effects and utility.

Note: You cannot combine Multishot and Piercing on the same crossbow.

  • Choose Multishot if you want to hit multiple enemies at once or enjoy a spread-shot style—great for crowd control.
  • Choose Piercing if you want to conserve arrows and hit targets in a line, ideal for tight corridors or enchanted arrow builds.

2.6 Trident

Best minecraft trident enchantments

The best enchantments for a trident are Unbreaking III, Impaling V, Mending, and Riptide III. Tridents are unique weapons, useful in both melee and ranged combat, and especially effective in aquatic environments. Below is a tier list of the top 6 best trident enchantments, with a breakdown of what each one does.

Top 6 Best Trident Enchantments

  1. Impaling: Increases damage dealt to aquatic mobs. In Java Edition, it only affects aquatic mobs; in Bedrock Edition, it affects any mob or player touching water—including in rain.
  2. Riptide: Launches you forward with the trident in water or rain. Great for fast travel and aerial movement.
  3. Loyalty: Makes the trident return to you after throwing. Higher levels increase return speed.
  4. Unbreaking: Reduces how often the trident takes damage—great for durability in combat.
  5. Mending: Uses XP to automatically repair the trident—ideal for long-term use.
  6. Channeling: Summons lightning during thunderstorms when striking mobs—unique but rare-use.

Note: You can't combine Riptide with Loyalty or Channeling—you must choose one usage type. Since the trident is most useful underwater, Riptide is usually the best choice for mobility, while Loyalty + Impaling makes the best thrown weapon. Channeling is fun but only works during thunderstorms, which are rare.

3. Best Enchantments for Armor

3.1 Helmet

Best minecraft helmet enchantments

The best enchantments for a helmet are Protection IV, Thorns III, Aqua Affinity, Respiration III, Unbreaking III, and Mending. Helmets aren't just for defense—they can also give you huge advantages underwater. Below is a tier list of the top 9 best helmet enchantments, including what each one does and when it shines.

Top 9 Best Helmet Enchantments

  1. Protection: Reduces most types of incoming damage. The best general defense enchantment for survival players.
  2. Respiration: Increases time you can breathe underwater. Great for exploring ocean structures.
  3. Aqua Affinity: Removes the mining speed penalty underwater. Must-have for ocean floor building.
  4. Unbreaking: Makes your helmet last longer by lowering durability loss chance.
  5. Mending: Uses XP orbs to repair your helmet. Perfect for long-term gear.
  6. Blast Protection: Reduces explosion damage—ideal near creepers, TNT, or beds in the Nether.
  7. Projectile Protection: Reduces damage from arrows, tridents, shulker bullets, etc.
  8. Fire Protection: Reduces fire and lava damage. Useful in the Nether or for fire-related threats.
  9. Thorns: Deals damage back to attackers. Use with Unbreaking and Mending to counter durability loss.
🛡 When Should You Use Specialized Protections?

While Protection IV is usually the best overall, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection, and Fire Protection can be better in specific situations. Use Blast Protection for TNT mining or creeper zones, Projectile Protection for raids and ranged combat, and Fire Protection for lava-rich areas or the Nether. Swap helmets based on the danger you expect—remember only one protection type fits per piece.

3.2 Chestplate

Best minecraft chestplate enchantments

The best enchantments for a chestplate are Protection IV, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, and Mending. Your chestplate is one of the most important armor pieces, giving you the most defense. Below is a tier list of the top 7 best chestplate enchantments.

Top 7 Best Chestplate Enchantments

  1. Protection: Versatile damage reduction from nearly all sources—best for all-around use.
  2. Unbreaking: Extends durability and reduces repair frequency.
  3. Blast Protection: Extra protection from explosions like creepers and TNT.
  4. Projectile Protection: Protects against arrows, tridents, shulker bullets, etc.
  5. Fire Protection: Cuts fire and lava damage—great for the Nether or fire-heavy fights.
  6. Thorns: Reflects damage back to attackers. Use with Mending and Unbreaking to maintain durability.
  7. Mending: Repairs your chestplate with XP—keeps gear going indefinitely when combined with Unbreaking.
🛡 Should You Use Specialized Protection?

Protection IV is the best general-purpose choice. But consider using Blast Protection in creeper zones, Projectile Protection when fighting skeletons or pillagers, and Fire Protection in lava-heavy environments or PvP. Just remember—you can't stack these with standard Protection, so tailor your armor based on the danger you're expecting.

3.3 Leggings

Best minecraft leggings enchantments

The best enchantments for leggings are Protection IV, Thorns III, Swift Sneak III, Unbreaking III, and Mending. Leggings play a crucial role in defense and durability—and are the only piece that can hold Swift Sneak. Below is a tier list of the top 8 best leggings enchantments, including what each one does and when it's most useful.

Top 8 Best Leggings Enchantments

  1. Protection: Reduces incoming damage from almost all sources—great for survival.
  2. Unbreaking: Helps your leggings last longer by reducing durability loss.
  3. Blast Protection: Reduces explosion damage. Ideal for TNT mining and creeper encounters.
  4. Projectile Protection: Lessens damage from arrows, tridents, and blaze fireballs.
  5. Fire Protection: Lowers damage and burn time from fire and lava.
  6. Swift Sneak: Increases crouch speed. Perfect for bridging or sneaking through dangerous areas like ancient cities. It's a treasure enchantment found only in Ancient City chests.
  7. Thorns: Returns damage to attackers. Use with Mending and Unbreaking for durability support.
  8. Mending: Repairs your leggings using XP. Best for long-term gear sustainability.
🛡 Protection or Specialization? Choose Based on Danger

Protection IV is the best all-around enchantment, but Blast Protection, Fire Protection, or Projectile Protection can be better in specific scenarios. Use alternate leggings for tasks like lava mining or fighting ranged mobs. Swift Sneak gives you unique stealth mobility and is exclusive to leggings—great for Deep Dark exploration.

3.4 Boots

Best minecraft boots enchantments

The best enchantments for boots are Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Soul Speed III, Unbreaking III, and Mending. Boots offer unique enchantments that improve mobility, exploration, and survivability. Below is a tier list of the top 10 best boot enchantments and when to use them.

Top 10 Best Boots Enchantments

  1. Protection: Reduces damage from most sources. Best for general survival.
  2. Feather Falling: Reduces fall damage. Critical for exploring caves or building high up.
  3. Depth Strider: Boosts swim speed. Great for ocean or underwater exploration.
  4. Unbreaking / Mending: Unbreaking makes boots more durable during travel and combat, while Mending repairs them with XP—together they keep heavily-enchanted boots going indefinitely.
  5. Frost Walker: Freezes water underfoot and negates magma block damage. Can't be combined with Depth Strider, and it's a treasure enchantment (trades, fishing or chest loot).
  6. Blast Protection: Reduces explosion damage. Great for TNT mining or creepers.
  7. Projectile Protection: Helps against arrows, tridents, and ghast fireballs.
  8. Fire Protection: Cuts fire damage and burn time. A top pick for Nether travel.
  9. Thorns: Reflects damage when hit. Pairs well with Mending for durability support.
  10. Soul Speed: Boosts your speed across soul sand and soul soil. It's a treasure enchantment—you can't roll it at the enchanting table. Get it by bartering with piglins or from bastion remnant chests.
🥾 Protection or Specialized Defense? Choose Wisely

Protection IV is the safest pick, but Blast Protection, Projectile Protection, or Fire Protection may outperform it in specialized roles. Use Depth Strider for swimming, Frost Walker for walking over water, and Soul Speed for racing across soul sand. Build your boots based on where you're headed.

Do Java and Bedrock enchantments differ?

Mostly they're identical, but a few enchantments behave differently between editions—and some myths persist. Here are the differences worth knowing:

EnchantmentJava EditionBedrock Edition
SharpnessAdds ~+0.5 damage per level (about +1–3 total at V)Adds ~+1.25 damage per level (about +1–6 total at V) — hits noticeably harder
ImpalingOnly affects aquatic mobs (guardians, fish, turtles, squid, etc.)Affects any mob or player touching water — including in rain
Infinity + MendingMutually exclusive — choose oneMutually exclusive — choose one (same as Java; a common myth says Bedrock allows both)

Everything else—Protection, Efficiency, Fortune, the mace enchantments, and so on—works the same in both editions at the current versions (Java 26.2 / Bedrock 1.26.30).

What's new for enchanting in 2026?

If you last enchanted gear a year ago, two updates changed the picture. Both are live in Java and Bedrock as of Java 26.2 / Bedrock 1.26.30:

  • Spears and the Lunge enchantment (Mounts of Mayhem). Spears are a brand-new long-reach melee weapon with a charged jab, and Lunge (I–III) is their exclusive enchantment—it launches you forward when you jab. Beyond Lunge, spears take standard melee enchantments like Sharpness, Unbreaking and Mending. See the spear section above for the full loadout.
  • The copper equipment tier (The Copper Age). There are now full copper tools, weapons and armor. Copper sits between stone and iron for durability, but its enchantability is lower than iron's—so while you *can* enchant copper gear, you'll get better enchantments (and better value from your XP) by saving your enchanting for iron, diamond and netherite.
  • The mace stays king of burst damage. Introduced a little earlier, the mace and its Density, Breach and Wind Burst enchantments remain the highest single-hit damage in the game when you attack from a height.

How to Enchant in Minecraft

What you need to enchant in Minecraft

Enchanting combines bookshelves, Lapis Lazuli, and plenty of experience to modify your gear. First, craft an Enchanting Table using four obsidian, two diamonds, and a book. Then surround it with bookshelves (15 for the highest-level enchantments). Here's a quick overview of where enchantments come from:

  • Enchanting Table: You spend Lapis Lazuli and XP levels to roll enchantments. Each attempt is partly random, so you won't always get what you want.
  • Villager Trades: Librarian villagers sell enchanted books. This is often more reliable than rolling the table repeatedly, especially for rarer options.
  • Loot and Treasure: Some enchantments—treasure enchantments—can't be rolled at the table at all. You only get them from fishing, chest loot, trades, or bartering (see below).

Which enchantments can't be found at the enchanting table?

These are the treasure enchantments. No matter how many bookshelves you build, the enchanting table will never offer them—you have to find them:

EnchantmentFrom the table?Where to get it
MendingNoLibrarian trades, fishing, chest loot
Soul SpeedNoPiglin bartering, bastion remnant chests
Swift SneakNoAncient City chests
Frost WalkerNoTrades, fishing, chest loot
Wind BurstNoOminous vault loot (Trial Chambers)
Curse of Binding / VanishingNoFishing, chest loot, trades
Everything else (Sharpness, Protection, Efficiency…)YesRoll it at the enchanting table

What's the cheapest order to combine enchantments?

Every time you use an anvil, the item remembers a hidden "prior work penalty" that grows each time—until it shows "Too Expensive" and won't accept more. The order you combine things in decides whether you finish cheaply or hit that wall. The trick is to combine enchanted books together first, in pairs, building one fully-loaded book, then apply that book to your gear last. Combining a bunch of books straight onto one item, one after another, racks up the penalty fast.

Pro tip: use a grindstone to strip enchantments (and reset the prior-work penalty) from an item you want to start over on—though it removes everything except curses and returns a little XP.

Don't want to do the math? Our free Enchantment Planner works out the cheapest anvil order to combine your books and gear for the least XP—just pick your item and enchantments.

Power Up and Play Smarter

The right enchantments turn basic tools into treasure-finding machines, armor into a fortress, and weapons into something mobs genuinely fear. Mending and Unbreaking belong on almost everything; Protection IV on every armor piece; and then the signature pick for each item—Fortune, Sharpness, Density, Lunge, Feather Falling—does the specialized work.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the best enchantment in Minecraft?

A: Mending is the single most valuable enchantment because it repairs gear automatically using XP, giving tools, weapons and armor effectively unlimited durability. It's worth putting on nearly every item you keep.

Q: What are the best enchantments for a spear?

A: Lunge III (its exclusive mobility enchantment), a damage enchantment like Sharpness V (or Smite/Bane of Arthropods), plus Unbreaking III and Mending. Spears take standard melee-weapon enchantments along with Lunge.

Q: Can you get Soul Speed from the enchanting table?

A: No. Soul Speed is a treasure enchantment—it never appears at the enchanting table. You get it by bartering with piglins, or from bastion remnant chests in the Nether.

Q: Can you enchant copper tools and armor?

A: Yes, but copper's enchantability is lower than iron's, so you'll get weaker enchantments for the same XP. Copper is a great early-to-mid-game tier—save your best enchanting for iron, diamond and netherite gear.

Q: How many bookshelves do I need around an enchanting table?

A: 15 bookshelves placed one block away (with air between them and the table) unlock the highest-level enchantments.

Q: Can I combine different enchantments on a single item?

A: Yes! Use an anvil to combine enchantments like Sharpness, Looting, and Unbreaking, unless they're mutually exclusive. Combine enchanted books together first to keep the anvil cost down.

Q: Why can't I get Mending from the enchanting table?

A: Mending is a treasure enchantment. You can only get it via chest loot, fishing, or trades with Librarian villagers.

Q: Which is better: Infinity or Mending on a bow?

A: They're mutually exclusive in both Java and Bedrock, so you must pick one. Choose Infinity for unlimited arrows (carry just one), or Mending if you'd rather the bow repair itself and don't mind carrying arrows.

Q: Does Frost Walker stop you from sinking in powder snow?

A: No. Frost Walker freezes water you walk over and cancels magma-block damage, but it does nothing for powder snow. Only leather boots keep you from sinking into powder snow.

Q: Can I remove an enchantment I don't want?

A: Yes. Use a Grindstone to remove all enchantments (except curses) and get a little XP back.

Q: Why can't I combine Silk Touch and Fortune on the same tool?

A: They're mutually exclusive. Choose Silk Touch to collect blocks in their original form, or Fortune for extra drops. Most players keep two pickaxes—one of each.

Q: How do I get XP quickly for enchanting and repairs?

A: Build an XP farm, breed animals, fish, smelt items, or mine nether quartz for fast experience gains.

Q: Are curses like Curse of Vanishing or Curse of Binding ever useful?

A: They're mostly for novelty or challenge runs. Curse of Vanishing deletes the item on death, while Curse of Binding locks a worn item to you until it breaks or you die.
