Ancient City
Ancient City is a generated structure in Minecraft. It is home to Warden.
The Ancient City is a massive structure that generates exclusively in deep dark biomes at Y level -51. It is the largest naturally generated structure in the game and features palatial layouts with long corridors, ruined buildings, and a central monument built from reinforced deepslate—a block unobtainable in survival mode.
The Ancient City is filled with sculk blocks, soul lanterns, and wool carpets that dampen vibrations. Sculk shriekers are common and can summon the Warden. Beneath the central frame, redstone contraptions and hidden basements contain working circuits like piston doors and filters activated by sculk sensors.
Loot chests contain exclusive items such as echo shards, disc fragments, and the Swift Sneak enchantment, along with enchanted gear, rare redstone components, and a high chance to find enchanted golden apples. Two unique armor trims, Ward and Silence, can also be found here. Additional "ice box" chests may include snowballs, packed ice, and food items.
Ancient Cities offer unique blocks, redstone features, and loot, but navigating them is dangerous due to the presence of shriekers and the Warden. These structures cannot overlap but may generate adjacent to one another in large deep dark cave systems.
Ancient City FAQ
Quick answers
Enter your world seed into the interactive seed map on this page and toggle the Ancient City marker to see the exact coordinates of every city in your world. Since they generate around Y -52 near bedrock inside Deep Dark biomes, knowing the X/Z location first saves a lot of digging.
Ancient Cities only generate in the Deep Dark biome in the Overworld, which forms deep underground below Y 0, most often beneath mountainous terrain. They appear in both Java and Bedrock Edition starting from version 1.19, sitting very low at roughly Y -52, close to bedrock.
Chests contain high-value loot like Echo Shards, Swift Sneak enchanted books, Disc 5 fragments, and enchanted diamond gear, with a redstone-trapped reward chamber at the center. No mobs spawn naturally, but sculk shriekers can summon the Warden, so sneak and avoid triggering them.
