The dappled forest is the new surface biome of the Wilderness Bound drop: orange grass, poplar trees in three leaf colors, and a carpet of leaf litter. It is also easy to walk past for hours, because it only grows in a narrow slice of the world. This guide skips the tour of the biome, which the catalog page covers. It answers where one is, with numbers we measured on 300 random seeds using the same engine that draws our Seed Map.
The dappled forest generates only where the world used to be plains. In Java 26.3 the game took the coolest and driest part of the plains climate range and gave it to the new biome. Nearly all of today's dappled forest would have been plains on the same seed in 26.2. In practice that means open grassland, near rivers, in cool country. Its edges often touch cherry groves, and sometimes snowy land such as ice spikes.
Across 300 seeds, this is what sat on the other side of a dappled forest's border:
| Biome on the border | Share of the border | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 35% | Follow rivers through grassland; they cut through almost every dappled forest | |
| 31% | The biome is carved out of plains, so plains are the country to search | |
| 8% | A cherry grove near plains is a good sign one is close | |
| 6% | Some reach the coast | |
| 5% | Same climate as plains, same hint | |
| 5% | Cold water is a sign you are in the right temperature band | |
| 3% | Rocky coastline, another sign you have reached the coast | |
| 2% | It sits at the cool end of plains, so it can border snow |
One catch: chunks you have already explored never change. A world started before 26.3 only gets dappled forests in land it has not generated yet. That also means some plains villages you would have found on a seed in 26.2 are not there in new chunks, because the forest now grows where they stood.
On a typical seed the nearest dappled forest is about 1,500 blocks from 0,0. It is rarer than a mangrove swamp and a little more common than a cherry grove, at about 0.4% of the Overworld's surface. Plains cover about 10%. Here is how far you had to go on 300 random Java 26.3 seeds, measured in a straight line from 0,0:
| Nearest dappled forest from 0,0 | Share of seeds |
|---|---|
| Within 500 blocks | 12% (about 1 seed in 8) |
| Within 1,000 blocks | 32% (about 1 in 3) |
| Within 2,000 blocks | 68% (about 2 in 3) |
| Within 3,000 blocks | 90% (9 in 10) |
| Within 4,096 blocks on both X and Z | 99% (298 of 300) |
So walking in a random direction and hoping is a bad plan: half the time the nearest one is further than 1,500 blocks away, and it may not be in the direction you picked. Bedrock 26.50 uses the same biome layout, so these distances apply there too.
Put your seed into a seed map with the biome highlighted, then walk to the nearest highlighted patch. This takes about a minute:

Want a world where it is right at spawn? Seed 1440 on Java 26.3 has a large dappled forest starting next to 0,0, with two abandoned camps inside it at X -144 Z 32 and X -464 Z -384. That seed is the map in this post's header image. The 26.3 version page lists what else changed in the update. If you are new to the tool, start with how to use a seed map.
Yes. The dappled forest arrived in both editions on September 15, 2026, in the Wilderness Bound drop: Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50. It is in normal survival worlds with no experiment toggle. As of Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.51 (the current releases), both editions use the same biome layout, so the same seed number puts a dappled forest in the same place in each.
| Java | Bedrock | |
|---|---|---|
| First version | 26.3 | 26.50 |
| Where it generates | Same place for the same seed | Same place for the same seed |
| Abandoned camps | Yes, marked on the Seed Map | Yes, marked on the Seed Map |
| Secret chest shown on the map | Yes, on the camps that have one | No, the map doesn't say either way |
You will know you are there from the colors: orange grass, orange-red-yellow canopy, and dark teal-grey water. These are the blocks and mobs worth coming for:
| What | Where you find it | Why you want it |
|---|---|---|
| Standing poplar trees and fallen logs across the ground | The whole poplar wood set: planks, stairs, doors, boats and more | |
| Poplar canopies, in three colors | Their color is fixed, so they keep it in any biome you build in | |
| Drops from poplar leaves (5%) | Grow your own poplar trees at home | |
Leaf Litter | A carpet under many of the trees | Ground cover for builds |
| On the sides of standing and fallen poplar logs | Bouncy to land on and softens falls; a stew ingredient | |
| The forest floor between trees | A red plant that keeps its color everywhere | |
| On top of fallen logs and on the ground | Mushroom stew | |
| A few spruce trees mixed in | Spruce wood without a trip to a taiga | |
| Spawn here (and no wolves) | What sets it apart from an ordinary forest | |
| Spawn in their cold-climate forms | The cold farm-animal variants, without travelling to snow | |
| On the surface | Loot, a camp map, and sometimes the secret chest (below) |
Poplar leaves can be smelted into leaf litter, and a poplar sapling grows anywhere you can plant one; it does not need the biome.
Yes. The dappled forest is one of the 18 biomes where the new abandoned camp generates, so a trip there often ends at a campfire among straw beds and cushions. In Java, a camp's loot comes from three kinds of container:
| Container | What it holds (Java 26.3) |
|---|---|
| Common chest | One |
| Barrels | Food and everyday supplies: bread, wheat, string, coal, glass bottles, sometimes a straw bed or a cushion |
Oxidized Copper Chest (the secret chest) | The best loot: diamonds or potions, iron, gold and copper ingots, sometimes an iron tool or armor piece, and an explorer map to a structure such as a woodland mansion or an ancient city |
Only some camps have the secret chest. 19 of the 49 campsite layouts the game can pick hold one, and about 2 camps in 5 end up with it. Our Seed Map tells you which ones before you set off, on Java and on Bedrock. Click a camp marker: a camp with the chest shows a Secret chest line, and the popup also lists the tent and campsite pieces the camp was built from.
Yes, sometimes. A camp's common chest holds one abandoned camp map whenever the game finds a camp for it to point to. The map is picked at random from eight kinds, and one of them is the Dappled Forest Camp Map. The other seven lead to bamboo jungle, birch forest, cherry grove, flower forest, pale garden, swamp and windswept forest camps. A chest never gives the map for its own biome, so a camp outside the dappled forest has a 1-in-8 chance of handing you a map to one (1-in-7 if the camp stands in one of the other seven map biomes). The map leads to a dappled forest camp, which means it leads to the biome itself.
Yes. A wandering trader can sell you a poplar sapling for 5 emeralds, or 8 poplar logs for 1 emerald, in both editions. One sapling is enough to start a tree farm: poplar leaves drop more saplings as they decay. You don't get the orange grass or the rabbits and foxes that way, but you do get the whole poplar wood set.
Skip the random walk: our Seed Map paints every dappled forest on your seed orange, marks the abandoned camps, and shows which camps hold the secret chest. It runs in your browser, Java and Bedrock.
Find a dappled forest on your seed →A: On September 15, 2026, in the Wilderness Bound drop: Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50. It is in normal survival worlds; no experimental toggle is needed.
A: Yes, since Bedrock 26.50. Both editions use the same biome layout, so the same seed puts a dappled forest in the same place on Java 26.3 and Bedrock.
A: Seed 1440 on Java 26.3 has a large dappled forest right next to spawn with two abandoned camps inside it (X -144 Z 32 and X -464 Z -384). For any other seed, open the Seed Map link in this post and the forests show up highlighted in orange.
A: It covers about 0.4% of the Overworld's surface, which makes it rarer than a mangrove swamp and a little more common than a cherry grove. On a typical seed the nearest one is about 1,500 blocks from 0,0, near where you spawn.
A: Chunks that were generated before 26.3 never change. Dappled forests only appear in land you have not explored yet, so travel past the edge of your explored area; the Seed Map shows where the forests are on your seed.
A: No. Unlike an ordinary forest, the dappled forest spawns rabbits and foxes and no wolves. Pigs, cows and chickens here take their cold-climate forms.
